William O'Meara

Mr. O'Meara attended the University of Kansas, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering and a Juris Doctor in Law. He is a member of the honor societies Sigma Tau and Sigma Gamma Tau. William worked as a mechanical engineer for Black and Veach , an international consulting engineering firm located in Kansas City, Missouri, between undergraduate school and law school.

Mr. O'Meara's first intellectual property position was with the patent law firm of William D. West, P.C. in Omaha, Nebraska. He worked at William D. West, P.C. for three years before joining Klaas & Law (now Klaas Law O'Meara & Malkin, P.C.) in Denver, Colorado. While at William D. West, P.C., Mr. O'Meara was a guest lecturer at Creighton Law School and authored the Creighton Law Review Article “Works Made for Hire” Under the Copyright act of 1976—Two Interpretations.

Much of Mr. O'Meara's patent work, while he was in Nebraska, dealt with agricultural machinery. After arriving in Denver William's patent work was initially focused on large industrial machinery. He obtained many patents directed to various aspects of high speed can making and bottle forming equipment for Coors Brewing Company. At this time he also prepared patent applications dealing with high speed composite packaging for Graphic Packaging Company. For the past decade much of Mr. O'Meara's patent work has dealt with high tech inventions produced by Hewlett-Packard Company and Avago Technologies Company, among others. Over the past 10 years, Mr. O'Meara has worked in a quasi in-house role for some of his high tech clients, substituting as needed for departing or absent in-house attorneys and reviewing the patent work of other outside counsel.

Some of the technology areas in which Mr. O'Meara has performed patent work include agricultural machinery, automotive devices, industrial machinery for container production, medical devices, mining equipment, oil and gas equipment, computers, printers, imaging devices, mass data storage devices, illumination devices, cameras, PDA's, software, wireless devices and security devices. In addition to patent preparation and prosecution, Mr. O'Meara has extensive experience in other areas of patent law including patent sales and licensing, infringement and validity opinions, due diligence reviews, product clearance searching, and litigation support. Mr. O'Meara also has expertise in many other areas of intellectual property law including trademarks, copyright, and trade secret law.
